Scrimshaw - Engraving, carving, etching on articles of ivory, whale bone or shell executed by whalers in their leisure time.

Generally acknowledge as the only original American art form, scrimshaw was born during the early days of whaling.  Earlier forms of scrimshaw were founded by the Eskimos of North America.

Most of ivory used by scrimshanders of today are the ancient or "fossil" ivories.  These include the Ivory of the extinct wooly mammoth and ancient tusk of Pacific Walrus.
